According to paperwork filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in the US, Matrix Partners India, a pioneering investor in startups, will launch a $450 million India fund. This marks the business’s fourth India-specific fund, via which it will support businesses operating in the Indian and South Asian markets, according to documents seen by ET.
While Matrix partner India’s competitors, such as Accel, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed, among others, have raised or are about to raise more money for the Indian market, the fund-raising is taking place at the same time.
Sequoia India announced on July 14 that it had funded a staggering $2.85 billion to enter the Indian and Southeast Asian markets.
Sequoia would combine its $300 million venture vehicle allocation with its seed-stage fund Surge. Elevation Capital (previously Saif Partners) raised its largest-ever fund at $670 million, while competitors like Accel India scooped up $650 million. The $500 million fund for investments in SEA and India is also being closed by Lightspeed Venture Partners.
In 2019, Matrix successfully raised a $300 million investment. Given that larger funds, including SoftBank and Tiger Global, among others, have predicted a halt in dealmaking and instructed their respective portfolio companies to conserve capital and prepare for a downturn, the fundraising becomes greater relevant. Early-stage investments, however, are not as negatively affected.
About the Company’s Foundation
Matrix, which was established in 1977, played a significant role in the 1980s growth of the venture capital sector. Paul J. Ferri and Warren Hellman formed the company’s immediate predecessor, Hellman Ferri Investment Associates, which existed from 1977 until 1982.
In 1982, Ferri and Hellman decided to part ways. Ferri established Matrix in Boston, Massachusetts, to focus on early-stage companies, and Hellman established Hellman & Friedman in San Francisco to specialize in later-stage firm investments.
