Rishi Sunak Biography

Rishi Sunak, a British politician and investor, was born in Southampton, England, on May 12, 1980. In October 2022, he was elected leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister of the United Kingdom. He was previously the Exchequer’s chancellor (2020–22).

Sunak was born into an immigrant family. His mother and father were born in Tanzania and Kenya, respectively, after his grandparents moved to East Africa from Punjab in northwest India.

Following the 1960s relocation of their families to Southampton in southern England, they fell in love and got married. Father of Sunak joined the National Health Service as a general physician. The oldest of their three children, Sunak, eventually kept the records for his mother’s little pharmacy, which she owned and ran.

 Later, during his political career, Sunak would make comparisons between her ideals and those of Margaret Thatcher, the icon of the Conservative Party and the daughter of a grocer, and his experiences working in the family business.

After William Hague’s defeat in the 2015 general election, Sunak was chosen to represent Richmond in North Yorkshire in the House of Commons. In the 2016 vote on EU membership, Sunak favoured leaving the EU.

As the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in Theresa May’s second government, he was chosen in the 2018 cabinet shake-up.

In support of May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement, he cast three votes. Sunak backed Boris Johnson’s run for Conservative Party leader after May quit. Johnson was named Sunak Chief Secretary to the Treasury when he was elected Prime Minister. During the February 2020 cabinet upheaval, Sajid Javid resigned, and Sunak took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

2010 saw Sunak begin his employment with the Conservative Party. During this period, he began working with Policy Exchange, a well-known think tank for conservatives, and in 2014 he was named head of the BME Research Unit.

A Portrait of Modern Britain, a pamphlet written by Sunak and Saratha Rajeswaran, the deputy head of the BME unit, was released by Policy Exchange that same year.

Sunak was picked by the Conservative Party in 2014 to run for the House of Commons constituency of Richmond in North Yorkshire, a safe Conservative seat long held by former party leader William Hague (1997–2001). Sunak was elected with a resounding majority in May 2015.

He served as a parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2015 to 2017 while also serving on the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

He was appointed to his first ministerial position in January 2018 as the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Governments undersecretary of state. Sunak became an outspoken advocate for Boris Johnson’s bid for the party’s top job, and after Johnson was elected leader and prime minister, he gave Sunak a promotion by appointing him chief secretary to the Treasury in July 2019.

Between 2001 until 2004, Sunak was an analyst at the investment firm Goldman Sachs. In September 2006, he joined the Children’s Investment Fund Management, a hedge fund management company, as a partner.

He resigned in November 2009 to work alongside old coworkers at Theleme Partners, a new hedge fund company with $700 million under management that debuted in October 2010. His supervisor at both hedge funds was Patrick Degorce. Between 2013 and 2015, he served as a director of N. R. Narayana Murthy, an Indian businessmanCatamaran ,’s Ventures, an investing company.
